Description

The game Terra Nil is a part puzzle and part reverse city builder game. The lifeless landscape of the average city-building game is replaced by a vibrant ecosystem and lush environments. The landscape is part of what makes the game so compelling, but it is also what makes it a little different from other Netflix games. Buildings in the landscape are a part of the landscape, but they are not part of life.

The ultimate goal of the game is to remove all human traces from the world, and thanks to the buildings systems, you have to do it in a specific order and with specific actions. This is not a sandbox game or a resource management puzzle game — it is a reverse-city builder, a time sponge, and a puzzle game all rolled into one. It does not have the grand ambitions of a game like Anno 2070, which supplant the compulsion loop of building civilizations one by one with a free lives words-per-plant. Instead, the developers focus on the nature of the world and the ideas behind it.

Later levels reveal maps of the entire game, allowing you to see where you have been and where you still need to go. The campaign, while not particularly long, has a lot of respect for the environment, and the way it challenges your assumptions and knowledge about environmental stewardship. The Terra Nil puzzle design and gameplay, despite its abstract setting and genre, is surprisingly easy to pick up and play. The entire game can be played without everthing being explained to you, which is rare in this genre.

The simple interface is easy to navigate, and there is a tutorial and guidebook to help you get started. Terra Nils themes of environmental restoration and rebirth are echoed in the game itself, from the calming, ASMR-like soundscape of rain and wind to the lush, paradise-like visuals of a huge botanical garden. In the recently released sim game, your ultimate goal is to green a barren area and return wildlife to their former glory.

The animals are your enemy, and your work is to make a profitable operation out of what was once a toxic wasteland. The goal, of course, is to restore the landscape to its original, barren natural state, with not one trace of the machinery you have in store. The juxtaposition of trees and machinery is jarring at first, but as you work your way through the different maps, you begin to see the end of your job in sight, and the landscapes mean no two playthroughs are ever the same. It is not a long-playing game, but it is worth your time if you are looking for something a little different from what you normally see in the store. Its core is simple, but its landscapes make it a game you will want to come back to time and time again.
